Superintendent Johnston on the 2018 Budget Process

PASS Parents and Friends —

With the start of the new year, we will begin another budget cycle for SCPS. Those of you who have been following PASS for a while will know that the process for developing the $60+ million budget for our county’s schools is an involved and complicated process. We at PASS will do our best to keep you apprised of this process as it unfolds.

Dr. Johnston does periodic blog-posts about issues affecting SCPS — they are always helpful and informative. Today he has his first post on the current budget cycle, and it’s sort of a good news/bad news post. The good news is that incomes, sales, etc. in Shenandoah County are up a bit, in the state’s estimation. The bad news is that, as a result, the state — which contributes the majority of the budget for SCPS — is going to expect ShenCo to contribute a little more toward the overall cost of local education.

Dr. Johnston also talks a bit about the respective roles of the School Board and the Board of Supervisors in this process. It is well worth a read. This process will play out over the next 4-6 months. Let’s make a New Year’s resolution to be informed and involved as it does.
